Sports & Activities at Local Schools

Sports and Other Activities at your Local Public School

A homeschool student may participate in Extracurricular Activities at the local public school. Here are the key criteria for participation:

  • Extracurricular Activities are activities that take place outside of the school’s regular classes and after the regular school day.
  • The student must meet the school district eligibility requirements for the activity. School sports have a minimum academic requirement. You will need to provide report cards for 1-2 semesters leading up to the sport participation. Some schools are requiring an official report card from the accountability association.
  • The student legally homeschooled for a full academic year prior to participating in an interscholastic activity. If you have been homeschooling for less that a year, it is up to the school if they will allow the student to participate. In this case, show the report cards for the past year from both school and homeschool to show that the student meets the academic requirements. This part of the law was added to prevent failing students from dropping out and then participating as homeschoolers.
  • For more information see the Equal Access Interscholastic Activities Bill.
